There are many situations that can affect hair growth, texture, and appearance. These are called hair diseases and disorders. Most people have these types:

- Folliculitis is an inflammatory response that happens in hair follicles. Typically, fungi or bacterial infections are what cause it.
- Hirsutism is when a woman's face and body hair grow in a manner that looks like a man's.
- In addition to hair growth due to androgens, hypertrichosis is when hair grows in an abnormal way anywhere on the body.
- Alopecia, or hypotrichosis, is the loss of hair in a way that isn't normal. It can be patchy or widespread, and is usually caused by genes, autoimmune diseases, or hormonal changes.
- People with alopecia (nonscarring) lose their hair all over or in circles, and their hairline recedes. They may also have broken hairs, an inflamed scalp, and lose their eyelashes, eyebrows, or genital hair.
- Certain areas are the only ones that get alopecia (scarring). Symptoms include redness and swelling around the edges of the sores, hair loss in the middle, dark violet skin changes, and scaling.
- Menkes Kinky Hair Syndrome is a rare genetic trait that causes hair to be brittle and break easily and makes it hard for the body to absorb copper.
- Monilethrix is a rare genetic trait that makes hair fall out at random, giving the person's hair a "beaded" look.
- Piedra: A fungal illness that makes hair break off and become brittle, often with itching and flaking.
- Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that makes patches of hair fall out. It is often found with other inflammation and autoimmune diseases.
- Telogen Effluvium (TE) is a disease in which a person loses a lot of hair. This can happen because of changes in hormones, stress, or not getting enough nutrients.
- Androgenetic alopecia, which results from genetic and chemical imbalances, is the most prevalent type of hair loss.
- A fungus that causes red bumps or spots to appear at the hair follicle opening is the source of the illness tinea capitis. This can cause patchy hair loss.
- Disorders of the hair shaft. Certain diseases or excessive processing, such as colouring, permanent waves, or too much heat, can result in hair shaft issues.
